How HubSpot Is Still Growing 20% After Nearly 20 Years

How HubSpot's inbound strategy, customer platform, pricing, and AI products are sustaining growth nearly 20 years in.

In this article 6

In 2025, HubSpot generated $3.13 billion in revenue and had more than 288,000 paying customers.

Nearly 20 years after its founding, and with annual revenue above $3 billion, HubSpot brought revenue growth back above 20% after a slowdown in 2024.

In the first quarter of 2026, it added more than 10,000 paying customers. The company expects to add over 10,000 more each quarter going forward—a strong pace of new-customer acquisition.

Beyond marketing, sales, and customer success, HubSpot is building service, business analytics, and AI productivity tools on the same customer data. That gives existing customers more reasons to buy: its customer renewal rate is 88%, and net revenue retention (NRR) is above 100%.

So how has HubSpot navigated changing market conditions and kept growing over the past few years?

What Does HubSpot Do?

HubSpot helped popularize inbound marketing after its founding in 2006.

The traditional approach to marketing is for companies to go looking for customers. But on the internet, people with a problem search for answers.

The idea is to create useful content so potential customers can find you.

That’s inbound marketing.

Common tactics include content marketing (blogs, white papers, templates, and tools), SEO, email nurturing, marketing automation, social media, communities, and referrals.

Here’s what makes HubSpot interesting: it didn’t just introduce inbound marketing; it became one of its most successful practitioners.

HubSpot itself is a platform for doing inbound marketing.

What Problem Does HubSpot Solve?

Once a company starts attracting leads, it faces another challenge.

Between a customer’s first interaction and an eventual purchase, a great deal of information is generated. Traditionally, companies manage that journey with separate tools:

Website: WordPress / Webflow
Email: Mailchimp
Sales: Pipedrive
Customer support: Zendesk
Analytics: Google Analytics
Automation: Zapier

The problem is fragmented customer data.

HubSpot’s core value is connecting the entire journey:

Content marketing → user behavior → user identity → sales opportunity → customer service → ongoing nurturing

That makes HubSpot especially compelling for growing companies that rely on inbound as a primary growth channel.

HubSpot isn’t just a CRM; it aims to be a platform for the entire customer journey.

HubSpot’s Business Model

HubSpot serves businesses ranging from solo operators to companies with more than 2,000 employees, although growing SMBs and mid-market companies remain its core market.

It serves marketing, sales, customer success, and support teams. HubSpot is also adding AI capabilities:

  • Breeze AI assistants;
  • AI agents.

These tools use customer data and business workflows to help automate tasks.

HubSpot’s business model can be summed up as:

Free products for acquisition + SaaS subscriptions + seat-based pricing + usage-based pricing + cross-selling across products

1. Acquire users with free products

HubSpot offers a free CRM, free tools, free courses, and free templates so businesses can get started with little friction.

2. SaaS subscription revenue plus seat-based pricing

3. Usage-based pricing: contact volume, with AI credits to come

4. Cross-selling: moving customers from one Hub to multiple Hubs

Financial Performance: A Classic High-Quality SaaS Trajectory

Here are HubSpot’s key financial metrics for 2023–2025:

Metric202320242025
Subscription revenue$2.323B$2.569B$3.063B
Paying customers205,000247,900288,700
Revenue per customer$10,581$10,598$10,846
NRR103.9%101.8%103.5%

The numbers show several traits of a high-quality SaaS business:

1. Predominantly subscription revenue

Subscriptions have consistently accounted for roughly 98% of total revenue. HubSpot is a mature subscription SaaS business.

2. A growing customer base

Paying customers:

205,000
↓
247,900
↓
288,700

3. Revenue per customer has been largely stable

Annual revenue per customer:

About $10,500

That suggests new-customer acquisition drove much of the revenue growth over the past few years.

4. Continued expansion among existing customers

NRR:

103.9% → 101.8% → 103.5%

In other words, existing customers as a group continued to contribute more revenue.

At the same time, revenue retention excluding expansion has remained around 80%.

New Signs of Growth in Q1 2026

HubSpot’s first-quarter 2026 results showed a clear improvement:

MetricQ1 2026
Subscription revenue$860M, up 23% year over year
Other services revenue$18M, up 22% year over year
GAAP operating margin3.2%
Non-GAAP operating margin17.8%
Paying customers299,458
Customer growth, year over year16%
Subscription revenue per customer$11,722

Compared with previous years:

Revenue is growing substantially faster than the customer base.

That tells us HubSpot is not only winning more customers; it is also increasing the value of each customer relationship.

How HubSpot Grows

1. Expanding inbound beyond SEO

Historically, HubSpot relied primarily on:

Content marketing + SEO

It is now expanding into:

  • Free products;
  • Product-led growth (PLG);
  • Social media;
  • Communities;
  • Influencers;
  • Partners;
  • Answer engine optimization (AEO).

AEO still produces a relatively small number of leads, but those leads convert at roughly three times the rate of other leads.

2. Driving cross-sell across Hubs

In the past, a customer might buy only one module—for marketing, sales, or service.

Now HubSpot is encouraging customers to adopt the full platform.

In Q1 2026:

  • 63% of new customers on Professional or higher started with multiple Hubs, up 3% year over year;
  • On an ARR-weighted basis, 42% of existing customers on Professional or higher used at least four Hubs, up 6% year over year.

3. Moving upmarket into larger mid-sized companies

HubSpot is moving beyond small businesses to win higher-value customers.

In Q1 2026:

  • The number of deals above $60,000 in ARR grew 37% year over year;
  • The number of deals above $120,000 in ARR grew 64% year over year.

4. Using a new pricing model to expand seats

HubSpot changed its pricing model in 2024.

The idea:

Lower the barrier to getting started
↓
Start with a small group of employees
↓
Add more seats once the value is clear

That change helped drive revenue growth in 2025 and 2026.

5. Commercializing AI products

HubSpot is embedding AI into its core Hub products, including AI for marketing, sales, customer support, and analytics.

For now, AI’s biggest value is not direct monetization. It is helping HubSpot:

  • Move customers to higher-tier plans;
  • Sell more product modules;
  • Increase usage frequency;
  • Reduce churn.

6. Working with partners to win complex larger customers

Stepping back, HubSpot’s growth over nearly 20 years has followed one central idea: inbound marketing. It has kept adding value to marketing and sales workflows.

For companies that rely on inbound marketing as their primary approach to marketing, HubSpot is a natural choice.

As businesses moved online, inbound marketing became an important way for many small and mid-sized companies to reach potential customers without relying entirely on paid advertising.

As new companies have emerged and grown, HubSpot has used its own example, expertise, and accessible tools to teach startups how to attract traffic—and become the first CRM many of them buy.

To accelerate growth again after nearly 20 years, HubSpot has had to keep adapting: make new tools easier to try, help customers start small and expand over time, grow revenue from a base of nearly 300,000 customers, and give existing customers reasons to upgrade with AI.

Creating value and adapting to change—that’s how HubSpot has kept growing through different market cycles.
